It originates from the Transkei region of the same name in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where the proud Xhosa people live. According to most origin stories, the small to medium sized, orange-brown mushrooms with their very twisted stems, were first discovered in the shade, on the dung of a local Nguni cattle.
